About US

At MotorRankings, we help everyday drivers choose automotive tools that actually work.

We’re a small team of car enthusiasts and hands-on testers based in Tampa. For the past several years, we’ve spent countless weekends testing car stereos, replacing batteries, scanning engine codes, and comparing automotive products in real driving conditions.

MotorRankings started the same way many garage projects do — with frustration.

Back in 2021, we were helping a friend diagnose a check engine light using an inexpensive OBD2 scanner he bought online. The scanner barely connected, provided incomplete data, and turned a simple fix into hours of confusion. After trying several other tools, we realized how difficult it could be to find automotive reviews based on actual product use.

We found that many reviews relied heavily on manufacturer specifications and product listings, with little information about real-world performance. For regular drivers trying to spend their money wisely, that made choosing the right product difficult.

So we built MotorRankings to do things differently.

Instead of publishing generic lists, we focus on practical testing, product comparisons, and straightforward advice from people who genuinely enjoy working with cars.

Since launching the site, our team has tested:

  • 40+ OBD2 scanners across different vehicle brands
  • 30+ car batteries in hot-weather and daily driving conditions
  • Dozens of car stereos, speakers, and head units for sound quality, installation, usability, and everyday performance

We focus on the details that actually matter in real life:

  • Does the scanner connect quickly?
  • Does the battery handle Florida heat?
  • Is the stereo interface easy to use while driving?
  • Are the features worth the price?

Those details can make the difference between a product that solves a problem and one that creates more frustration. That’s what we try to uncover before recommending anything.

What We Cover

MotorRankings focuses on three automotive areas where we have extensive hands-on testing and research experience.

Car Stereos

From budget single-DIN radios to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto head units, we evaluate stereos for sound quality, usability, installation difficulty, connectivity, and overall value.

Car Batteries

Testing in Florida has given us firsthand experience with how high temperatures can affect battery performance. We compare starting performance, durability, reserve capacity, everyday reliability, and overall value to help drivers make informed choices.

OBD2 Scanners

OBD2 scanners can make vehicle diagnostics easier, but their capabilities vary widely. We evaluate scanners for vehicle compatibility, connection reliability, diagnostic functions, live data, app quality, ease of use, and overall value.

How We Test Products

We believe automotive reviews should be practical, transparent, and based on real-world use—not just marketing claims.

When we physically test a product, we follow a consistent process:

  1. Research the product and compare it with relevant alternatives.
  2. Evaluate setup and installation, including how difficult the process is for a typical DIY user.
  3. Use the product in real-world conditions to evaluate its practical performance.
  4. Compare key features, performance, durability, and value against competing options.
  5. Report the strengths and weaknesses honestly, including problems we encounter during testing.

We also separate manufacturer specifications from our own observations so readers can understand what comes from the manufacturer and what we experienced ourselves.

If a product has problems, we explain them.

If a less expensive option performs better for a particular use, we say that too.

Our goal isn’t to convince you to buy more products. It’s to give you enough practical information to choose the right automotive tool for your needs and avoid wasting money on the wrong one.

Meet the MotorRankings Team

Jason Miller is the founder of MotorRankings and an automotive enthusiast with hands-on experience testing car electronics, OBD2 scanners, batteries, stereos, and other automotive tools.

His work focuses on real-world product testing and comparison. He evaluates products for performance, reliability, ease of use, compatibility, installation, and overall value—not just manufacturer claims.

Jason has a particular interest in OBD2 diagnostics, car batteries, and aftermarket car electronics. He founded MotorRankings to give everyday drivers practical, honest advice based on how automotive products actually perform in real-world use.

His goal is simple: help readers choose reliable automotive products and avoid wasting money on tools that don’t deliver.

Who We Help

MotorRankings is built for regular drivers — not professional race teams or luxury collectors.

Most of our readers are:

  • DIY car owners
  • First-time buyers
  • Daily commuters
  • Budget-conscious drivers
  • People upgrading their vehicles at home

Whether you’re replacing a weak battery, upgrading your stereo system, or trying to diagnose a check engine light yourself, we want our content to feel simple, useful, and trustworthy.

You shouldn’t need to be a mechanic to understand automotive tools.

Why Readers Trust MotorRankings

Trust is earned through transparency, consistent testing, and honest reporting.

When we test a product, we focus on practical details that matter to everyday drivers. We use our own observations, testing results, product comparisons, and original photos where available rather than simply repeating manufacturer descriptions.

We also keep our content updated as products, features, compatibility, and technology change. This is especially important for areas such as OBD2 scanners and car electronics, where capabilities can change quickly.

We don’t recommend a product simply because it is expensive or popular. We consider how well it performs, who it is suitable for, how easy it is to use, and whether it offers good value for its intended purpose.

If we find a significant limitation or problem during testing, we include it in our review. If a less expensive product is the better choice for a particular driver, we’ll explain why.

Our goal is simple: give you clear, practical information so you can make a more informed automotive buying decision.
